Balancing Act II

At the vegetable market, a pair of scales will balance if 1 head of cabbage and 1 lemon are on one side and 7 tomatoes are on the other. 3 lemons will balance with 1 ½ tomatoes. How many tomatoes will balance with 1 head of cabbage?

  1. Answer........1 head of cabbage will balance with 6½ tomatoes.
    If 3 lemons balance with 1½ tomatoes, then 1 lemon is equal in weight to ½ tomato. To find out how many tomatoes balance with the cabbage, subtract the equivalent of a lemon, or half a tomato, from each side.
